“This year marks the 81st anniversary of one of the most iconic symbols for Anheuser-Busch, the Budweiser Clydesdales,” said Jeff Knapper, general manager for Clydesdales operations. “The Clydesdales have been an integral part of Anheuser-Busch’s heritage since 1933, and their strength and majesty symbolize Budweiser’s quality and team spirit. It is truly special to see how these magnificent horses spend their early years and later grow to become one of the world’s most recognized animals.”

To qualify for the world-famous eight horse hitch, Budweiser Clydesdales must meet certain size, colour and disposition requirements. Standing at 18 pounds high (about six feet) at the shoulder when fully mature, Budweiser Clydesdales weigh approximately 2,000 pounds. They must be geldings, bay in colour, have four white legs and a blaze of white on the face, as well as a black mane and tail. A gentle temperament is a very important characteristic, as hitch horses meet millions of people each year.

Numerous award-winning ads have made the Budweiser Clydesdales famous across Canada.  This year’s NFL Super Bowl spot, ‘Puppy Love,’ featured a feisty, round-bellied puppy smitten by a friendly Clydesdale draft horse. Canadian fans enjoyed both the commercial and the behind-the-scenes video.
