Open Roof Festival Continues With 80’s Throwback Comedy PING PONG SUMMER

Toronto fans of indie film and music will get another chance to watch their favourite stars under the stars, as the Open Roof Festival (ORF) continues for its fifth season, running weekly from June 19 through to August 21. It’s going to get weird. Real weird, as the Toronto trio of robots from space known as Matrox bring their Kraftwerk-esque dance music to the ORF soundstage.

Tonight’s film, Ping Pong Summer, starring Susan Sarandon, keeps the extraterrestrial theme going at sundown. Rad Miracle is a shy 13-year-old white kid who’s obsessed with ping pong and hip-hop. On his family’s annual summer vacation in 1985, Rad makes a new best friend, experiences his first real crush, becomes the target of rich local bullies and finds an unexpected mentor in his outcast next-door neighbour. Ping Pong Summer is a movie that skillfully captures the trials, tribulations and triumph of self-discovery in an adolescent who feels like an alien to everyone around.

The evening’s custom menu crafted by 99 Sudbury’s in-house chefs echoes the setting of the film with a “Beach BBQ” theme. Plus, a diverse selection of food items from Cool City Oyster Yard, and beers from ORF’s long-standing partner Amsterdam Brewery.
