One Direction continued their remarkably successful summer by winning a prize at last night’s MTV Video Music Awards.

The British boy band won the Song of the Summer award for their track Best Song Ever at the ceremony in New York.

Other winners on the night included the American singer Justin Timberlake, who picked up four awards, including Video of the Year, and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Bruno Mars, who each won two awards.

The quintet – who formed on British talent show X Factor in 2010 and comprise Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson – were victorious in the only category they were nominated in. The win takes their MTV VMA tally to four, after they won three awards at last year’s ceremony.

The win confirms the band as one of the biggest pop acts in the world, less than a week after the premiere of their first film, One Direction: This Is Us, drew thousands of screaming fans to Leicester Square.

Best Song Ever became the band’s eighth top-10 hit in less than two years when it was released last month, and helped take the band’s worldwide singles sales to over 20 million.

Last night the group also presented the Best Pop Video award to Justin Timberlake. The 32-year-old’s video for Mirrors beat Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines and Taylor Swift’s I Knew You Were Trouble to the award. Timberlake, who now has 11 MTV VMA awards to his name, was honoured with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award – the equivalent of a lifetime achievement award.

After being presented with the award by comedian Jimmy Fallon, Timberlake said: “I don’t deserve this award. But I’m not going to give it back.”
His videos also won the awards for Best Direction (for Suit and Tie) and Best Editing (for Mirrors), and reunited with the other members of his former boy band N-Sync to perform live at the ceremony.

Other live performers included Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry. US hip hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis won the Best Video with a Social Message award for Same Love, a song which supports gay rights and condemns homophobia in rap culture. (telegraph – By James Lachno)
