MUSIC ON FILM SERIES RETURNS TO THE BLOOR HOT DOCS CINEMA OCTOBER 28-MARCH 31 HOT DOCS AND THE ROYAL CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC PRESENT MUSIC DOCUMENTARIES WITH SPECIAL GUESTS Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival and The Royal Conservatory of Music join together once again to showcase inspiring music documentaries, featuring special guests in attendance. MUSIC ON FILM will explore different music genres, followed by stimulating post-screening discussions with accomplished musicians moderated by Mervon Mehta, executive director of performing arts at The Conservatory. The MUSIC ON FILM series screens select Tuesdays, from October 28-March 31, at the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, 506 Bloor Street West. FADOS (D: Carlos Saura; Portugal, Spain; 2007; 92 min; STC) opens the series on Tuesday, October 28, 2014. Using Lisbon as a backdrop, director Carolos Saura explores fado, Portugal's most emblematic musical genre. The result is a ravishing fusion of cinema, song, instruments and dance. A post-screening Q&A will take place with a special guest in attendance. In Portuguese, with English subtitles. VLADIMIR HOROWITZ: THE LAST ROMANTIC (D: Albert Maysles, David Maysles; USA, 1985, 88 min, STC) features intimate performances from the home of the award-winning classical pianist Vladimir Horowitz. Directed by the renowned Maysles brothers, this Emmy-winning film screens on Tuesday, November 25, 2014. Screening with TWO HANDS: THE LEON FLEISHER STORY (17 min). Pianist Leon Fleisher will participate in a post-screening Q&A. Academy Award nominee LET'S GET LOST (D: Bruce Weber, USA, 1988, 120 min, STC), reveals the life of legendary jazz musician Chet Baker. On Tuesday, January 27, 2015, explore the origins and rise of the talented trumpet player and singer, featuring Chet's family, friends and musicians including William Claxton, Andy Minkser and many more. Toronto saxophonist Pat LaBarbera, who played with Baker on his frequent trips to Toronto, will participate in a post-screening Q&A. CALLE 54 (D: Fernando Trueba; Spain, France; 2001; 105 min; STC) offers an incredible behind-the-scenes glimpse into the lives of some of the greatest Latin jazz artists of our time including Grammy Award winner Tito Puente. The vibrant CALLE 54 screens Tuesday, February 24, 2015. A post-screening Q&A will take place with a special guest in attendance. In French, English, and Spanish, with English subtitles. THIS AIN'T NO MOUSE MUSIC (D: Chris Simon, Maureen Gosling; USA; 2013; 92 min; STC) shares the story of Roots music icon Chris Strachwitz, founder of Arhoolie Records, who has fought back against corporate 'mouse music' since the 60s. On Tuesday, March 31, 2015, follow Strachwitz as he travels from Texas to New Orleans, Cajun country, and Appalachia, on his passionate quest to find the musical soul of America.
